Attacks on public health defeated—for now.

The coal lobby and their allies are trying to block the EPA from protecting public health, but we’ve held the line against some of their worst attacks: In March 2011, the U.S. Senate rejected a bill that would have blocked standards for soot, mercury and carbon pollution. In April, the Senate defeated four more bills that would have blocked the EPA from cutting air pollution.

Citizens Rally for Reform on the Current River

Today Environment Missouri and a statewide coalition of environmental groups and outdoors advocates rallied at City Hall to call on the National Park Service to rehabilitate the Current River, which lies at the heart of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Wielding canoe paddles signed by concerned citizens to highlight the Current’s role as Missouri’s premier float stream, the group delivered nearly 5,000 petition signatures to the National Park Service urging reform.

Missouri Officials Sign Clean Air Promise to Protect Public Health

Last week Missouri's Commissioner of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Dr. Chris Nicastro, Saint Louis Alderwoman Phyllis Young and Saint Louis Alderwoman Lyda Krewson signed onto the Clean Air Promise. The Clean Air Promise is a pledge to protect American children and families from dangerous air pollution by defending clean air policies against Congressional attacks.

Missouri's Biggest Mercury Polluters

Environment Missouri Research & Policy Center's new report on airborne mercury emissions from power plants shows that Missouri power plants emit more mercury pollution than those in 46 other states.  The Ameren Labadie Energy Center in Franklin County is the nation's 2nd worst mercury emitting power plant. Mercury is a potent neurotoxicant. Mercury exposure during critical periods of brain development can contribute to irreversible deficits in verbal skills, damage to attention and motor control, and reduced IQ.
